Florida Poly Proposes Degree Programs, Plans for Student Recruitment

LAKELAND, March 25, 2013 – Following months of research and discussions with academic consultants, Florida Polytechnic University’s Strategic Planning Committee has recommended five degree programs in the College of Innovation and Technology and the College of Engineering.

“After an extremely thorough market investigation, these programs were identified as meeting the real-time response to employer needs, and are in-line with the recommendations of the Board of Governor’s Commission on Higher Education Access & Attainment,” said Dr. Ghazi Darkazalli, Vice President of Academic Affairs for Florida Poly. “The introduction of these programs and academic goals is the culmination of extensive efforts that have taken place over the last several months.”

Within each of the proposed degree programs, there are opportunities for students to specialize in certain fields of concentration. Here is the college and degree program breakdown:

 PROPOSED DEGREE PROGRAMS
College of Innovation and Technology
Degree  Fields
Bachelor’s and Master’s of Advanced Technology Cloud Virtualization & Big Data Analytics
Bachelor’s and Master’s of Science Logistics, Materials and Supply Chain
Bachelor’s and Master’s of Computer Science and Information Technology Cyber Gaming, Information Assurance and Cyber Security
College of Engineering
Degree  Fields
Bachelor’s and Master’s in Electrical and Computer Engineering Control Systems, Magnetics, Digital Systems, Electrodynamics, Semiconductors

The proposed technology and engineering-focused degree programs place emphasis on experiential and applied learning opportunities for students. Industry partnerships will be a cornerstone of Florida Poly, allowing students to gain real-world problem-solving, work experience and business leadership opportunities.

“We want to provide students with the education that they need to meet the demands of global economic trends and Florida’s evolving industry landscape,” said Darkazalli. “The objective is to have 75 percent of students placed in full-time jobs by the time they graduate.”

In addition to the strong focus on science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) courses, the proposed degrees incorporate mandatory leadership, finance and management training into all programs.

“Our goal is to produce students who not only are capable of meeting the demands of STEM-related employers, but who are also capable of creating that demand themselves,” said Board Chairman Rob Gidel. “We want our graduates to have the tools to manage the business of STEM.”

Florida Poly’s first students are expected to begin courses as early as August 2014, and the student recruitment strategy is already underway.

The Committee proposed agreements with STEM charter and magnet schools to serve as feeders to Florida Poly. The University will also collaborate with state colleges to implement feeder programs for students looking to transition to Florida Poly after obtaining an associate’s degree.

Other strategies include employing a summer studies program for youth modeled after Duke’s Talent Identification Program (TIP) and recruiting international students from South America and Asia.

“I am extremely pleased with the work of the Strategic Planning Committee and Dr. Darkazalli and his team,” said Chief Operating Officer Ava Parker. “They have developed exceptional degree programs that are responsive to Florida’s economic needs. And they have established a solid student recruitment model to attract the best and brightest to Florida Poly.”

Florida Polytechnic University’s Board of Trustees will meet on April 2, 2013.

FPU Gains Interim Staff – Latest Update:

Last Friday, August 24, administrators from University of South Florida, the University of Florida and Florida’s Board of Governors, along with two members of Florida Polytechnic University’s board of trustees, met to review approximately 3,000 pages of information documenting the transfer of assets from USF Polytechnic to the new Florida Polytechnic University.

Officials from each university provided different insights into the process. USF’s administrators presented information on what FPU will inherit and when the transfers will happen and UF’s administrators discussed the staff they will soon loan to FPU. These staff will work in the interim, until FPU can hire permanent staff to take over. In addition, USF will cover basic needs, including running a line of credit for FPU, until an admin staff is put in place.

Florida Polytechnic’s full board of trustees will meet on Wednesday, September 5, where they will work out the details of the staffing agreement, receive a tour of the current FPU construction site and continue to make giant strides in shaping FPU’s bright future.

More updates to follow.

FPU Board of Trustees Meets for the First Time

Today, Florida Polytechnic University’s (FPU) newly appointed Board of Trustees met for the first time for an orientation session hosted by the Florida Board of Governors (BOG). With today’s gathering, eight of the thirteen appointed trustee members have begun the discussions that will shape Florida’s 12th university.

During the meeting, many BOG and Board of Trustee members expressed their excitement about launching Florida’s newest university, despite any challenges that may lie ahead. Some speakers listed the many resources available to the trustees in the future, including Florida businesses, local community members and even other state universities. Members of BOG leadership encouraged the new trustees to think creatively, leave all differences aside and focus on the end goal of making the university a success for future generations.

During the meeting and orientation, trustees received and overview of:

  • The guidelines for funding and building facilities and possibly flexible structures;
  • Possible economic benefits of FPU;
  • Some options for attracting students including free tuition, job guarantees upon graduation and/or all-star faculty;
  • An overview of the Statute that created FPU;
  • Academic program planning and a renewed focus on quality of degrees not quantity of graduates;
  • The status of USF Polytechnic’s teach-out process that must be completed in 3 years;
  • The transfer process between USF and FPU including land and funds;
  • Crafting rules and regulations for FPU.

In addition, the Board of Trustees elected Robert Gidel as chairman and Mark Bostick as vice chair. Gidel, of Windemere, is a partner at Liberty Capital Advisors, and Bostick, of Lake Wales, is president of Comcar Industries.

With the Board of Trustees already taking the first official steps to open FPU’s doors to our communities and state, great things area undoubtedly on the horizon!

Remembering Sally Ride

This past week, we paused to honor one of America’s greatest trailblazers Sally Ride, an astronaut and STEM education advocate, who passed away on Tuesday, July 23, from pancreatic cancer.

Throughout her life, the courageous Sally Ride made giant strides to inspire all Americans, especially women, to challenge societal barriers and pursue her passion for physics and education.

In 1983, Sally became the first American woman to fly into outer space, and while not everyone knew how to react to her participation and accomplishments in the space program, Sally pressed forward to eventually serve as an advisor to NASA and serve on the commission to investigate the Challenger and Columbia shuttle accidents. Sally continuously dared to explore ideas and areas where many had never ventured before.

Her passion for educating our future generations in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) fields also paved the way for many students to pursue careers in these innovative and high-tech disciplines. For years, she educated young minds about physics at the University of California in San Diego and in 2001 she founded Sally Ride Science – a company which created innovative classroom materials and programs, as well as professional development training for teachers.  She also published seven books which sought to ignite a child’s natural curiosity about science.

Through her dedication and willingness to explore, many lives have been changed. Future generations now have more opportunities to discover the many benefits and growing opportunities of STEM-related disciplines than ever before and we hope these opportunities continue to increase.

UPDATE ON BOARD OF GOVERNORS’ SELECTION OF FLORIDA POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY’S BOARD OF TRUSTEES

During a meeting today, the Florida Board of Governors (BOG) took giant strides toward the development of Florida’s 12th university.  The BOG’s Trustee Nominating and Development Committee settled on four of five appointments for the Florida Polytechnic University’s Board of Trustees after conducting 10 extensive interviews on Wednesday.

All four appointees – Sandra Green Featherman, Richard Paul Hallion Jr., Frank Thomas Martin and Donald Herbert Wilson – were approved by the Board of Governors and will be on the Board of Trustees for at least 2 years.

The new Board will consist of 13 individuals – five chosen by the BOG, six chosen by Governor Rick Scott and two, dictated by Florida statute, reserved for the faculty senate president and the student government president. The BOG’s fifth appointee will be chosen after Governor Scott makes his selections.

Here are quick profiles of the first four appointees to the 13-member Board of Trustees:

Sandra Green Featherman of Highland Beach, president emeritus of the University of New England, retired

Richard Paul Hallion Jr. of Shalimar, research associate in aeronautics at the National Air & Space Museum, Smithsonian Institution

Frank Thomas Martin of Clermont, senior vice president for Atkins North America

Donald Herbert Wilson of Homeland, lawyer

With these appointments, it’s undeniable we will soon see the formal infrastructure that so many individuals in our community are calling for.

But that does not mean Florida PolyVision’s work is coming to a close. In fact, it’s just the opposite!

Now more than ever, we need to speak up and be heard! We need to let these trustees know that Polk County welcomes them and appreciates their willingness to serve and move Florida Polytechnic University forward. They will help shape the future of Florida’s newest university and our community, and we must support them in their efforts to make for a brighter tomorrow.

We share a common goal, let’s work together to achieve it!

With the beginning of the new Fiscal Year come and gone, several budget and administration-related tasks and items have officially been transferred to, or begun to operate under, the new Florida Polytechnic University as of July 1. Many administrative procedures and tasks however still await the official appointment of the full Board of Trustees before they can begin.

Poly Vision echoes Committee Chair, and Florida BOG Vice-Chair, Mori Hosseini’s words, which reiterate the importance of focusing on quality as the driving force behind this process as we await their official selection announcements to come in the following weeks.
